Note:

The Gymnasium Owner/Supervisor should insure that chairs, tables and other sports equipment such as, movable bleachers, volleyball equipment, including standards, etc., are taken off the floor and stored in a temporary place while this Routine Annual Maintenance is being performed.

The Process:

1) The floor is cleaned prior to the beginning of any work.

2) Prior to and even during the Buff-Sanding Process, tar, gum and other debris are being removed from the floor. In some instances. Removal of these foreign materials may require scraping or adding mild chemicals to assist with the softening process and the correct extraction of these unwanted surface materials without damaging the floor.

3) The floor is then Buff-Sanded, using the most appropriate Steel Screens Sanding-Discs. The discs are usually 60/100/150/or, in some instances, other steel grit screens However, we do use the application necessary to complete the job correctly..

4) Following the complete Disc-Sanding of the Gymnasium Floor, liquid chemicals are applied to the entire floor surface. It is at this point that body fluids and other unwanted surface bacteria are being removed. Afterwards, the floor will, again, be thoroughly clean and dry before the application of the High Grade Polyurethane finish and final coat.

5) When the floor is dry, the FIRST COAT of  (High Grade) POLYURETHANE is then evenly applied over the entire Gymnasium Floor. This application is undertaken, using "Gravity Flow Containers with Lambs Wool-Like Applicators." This allows the Polyurethane liquid to be applied monolithically and without separations and irregular-markings. The coverage is 100 percent.

6) Usually after one day, the SECOND COAT of (High Grade) POLYURETHANE is applied evenly on top of the already surface-dried first coat. The application of this second coat is the same as the first coat of Polyurethane.

7) This is the final process for the Annual Maintenance Program. However, it is important that no one walks on the floor for a minimum of 48 hours. This allows the curing process to harden the surface of the Polyurethane.

8) For some on-floor requirements, such as Indoor Hockey, Kids Mobile Cars, Roller Skating, and other very rigorous uses, it would be best to wait for one week to ten days before undertaking these activities.

Additional Services During the Annual Maintenance Process:

a)  Repairs can be made at this time.

b) Additional Gamelines (or repainting of old gamelines) should be done during this process.

c) Logos, lettering and or other changes to the lines or layout configuration can take place during this work.

d) Keep in mind, gamelines that are already in place cannot be removed. They can only be modified by adding other lines, or configurations you may wish to apply. Changing the gameline layouts, that is removing lines, logos or lettering can only take place during the complete drum-sanding of the floor. This is outlined on another Bulletin:

SportsGuard Sanding and Finishing Gymnasium Floors

Note:

Those who do allow the above process on an annual basis have floors that look very new and sanitary. Also, they are more serviceable for a longer period of time. The foot traction, for sports games and or walking, with the newly applied Polyurethane is excellent, and the need to sand and completely finish the gym floor can usually be postponed considerably.

There are other ways to help maintain the gym floor through the year.

1) Read about this in the Daily Maintenance Guide. We discuss in detail, ways to maintain your floor on an ongoing basis. Refer here to our Web site: www.GymnasiumDesigns.com

2) Consider the purchase of a Gymnasium Floor Cover with the Floor Cover Storage Rack. This helps the floor with regard to Street-Shoe Traffic while the floor is not being used for basketball and other sports.
